Had been cracking my head which is the best location to do photoshoot of fireworks during the New Year Eve Countdown... I was pretty undecided between The Promontory @ Marina Bay or at Marina Bay Sands. On the other hand, weather was definately a crucial factor & in case of rain, what would be my contingency plan.
Finally on the day before, I sms my buddy ~ Ruby that we would go to the stretch @ marina bay, which was also a stone throw away fr MBS... keep our fingers cross! This is the first time i'm doing the NYE's fireworks & it's probably 10 years since i wana go jostle among the crowd during the countdown... since i could easily watch the fireworks from home, haha!
We met up in the evening for a budget dim sum dinner in Chinatown... which i tink would be better than joining long Qs at eateries in town. By 7.30pm, we were on our way via MRT to Marina Bay. Juz as we were strolling, i felt a slight drizzle...oh dear, better dun let it be a downpour! Luckily it didn't, phew! When we reached the area, we saw an extremely glaring spotlight beaming at the wishing spheres floating on the water... Since some yrs back, this had became one of the highlights for the Marina Bay Countdown, where people wrote their new year wishes on the inflated white plastics.
Despite my research on the local forum, nobody really know where's exactly the best spot to take photos... I'm also not sure exactly where the fireworks will be fired from, only gathered that it would be a compass-rose like design, where anyone standed around the bay will be able to see! Our initial spot seemed quite a distance & I couldn't really get the perfect test shot... then ruby suggested that we move further up. I also met denise & her bf ~ ZL, but they din wana camp for 4hrs... The new spot was better but the unexpected came up... On my left side, suddenly appeared a family wif a huge mat... On my right were 3 tall tripods set up by a grp of youngsters. Then, Denise msg me that they wana join us so we 'chope' a space for them.
The best part for the evening was my 2 buddies finally got to say 'hello' to each other! Cos i had been trying to organise a fotoshoot for 3 of us, but in vain. At 11pm+, Ruby headed home as she din wan to be stuck wif no transport home, haha! At that time, ZL + Denise & me felt hungry & ZL went off to buy snacks for us. The nitemare began as we suddenly realised a huge bunch of FT were standing behind us... prior to that, an A.N couple also invaded my space by lying on the ground, grrr.... I started worrying about my cam & tripod being pushed!!!
The next nitemare was when denise realised that her view got blocked by the tall guys on her right...haiz! While i kept trying to re-adjust my tripod within the constraint space. ZL finally came back wif the burgers at the 11th hour, gosh! By then, i told him to quickly re-align their cam. Finally when midnite struck, the first burst of fireworks went off! It turned out to be fired from the area between Esplanade & the Floating Stage. Hence, I had to quickly shift my focus, while at the same time warding off the people pushing from behind!
When i was doing the long exposure, the idiot next to me moved & knocked my tripod! S***! Juz earlier, one of his family's member even squeezed into e tiny space & "promised" would move off aft 20mins.... Never believe them hor! The next factor was the wind... the intensive fireworks' smoke was not dispelled in time, hence if missed the first few bursts, the behind ones would be shrouded in smoke! Wat a pity! Hence, none of my shots were satisfactory.
Thou we waited for 20mins to let the crowd dispel abit, it was still chaotic when we made our way to the MRT... Due to blockages to the mrt entrance, we ended up walking past the bus-stop & hopped on the last bus! Phew! It was indeed the best way to get us home. My lesson learnt ~ Probably i shall hold a durian party & gather more frens (to increase 士氣) & then use the empty husks to ward off the pushing people!
