Kawaii desu! ''PoNyo PoNyo''... kept hearing this song from its trailer on tv, keke! Months before this Jap anime by 宫崎峻大师 arrived in Singapore... i had read about it's rave review from the chinese papers. It took a long time for 宫崎峻 (Hayao Miyazaki) to painstakingly hand-draw the characters. With the flood of hollywood 3-D animation, i like the idea of going back to basics (2-D anime). It really tests the skills of the anime artist.
I am awed by 宫崎峻 imagination & how he's always able to lend a magic touch to the characters he created. ''Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea'' uses a palette of colours, especially like the pastel shades of the house perched on top of the cliff & it's surroundings. Whereas deep hues are used to depict the uncertainties in the deep waters...
The story teaches us about saving the environment, if humans continue to pollute the sea with all their garbage, many sea species will go into extinction & affect the life cycle chain. Well, aren't the raising sea levels & melting ice bergs our immediate concerns now? We also learnt a thing or two from the 5 yr old boy ~ Sosuke. His father is a sailor & always need to leave him & his young mom, Lisa to fan for themselves. Despite being young, Sosuke is a sensible, well-mannered & brave boy. He know how to cheer his mom up when dad is away by using morse code to signal to his dad. He also works his charm on the old folks at the seniors' home by making 'goldfish' origami for them.
One day, he found a fish trapped in a jar while he was playing at the bottom of the cliff. Sosuke reared the little fish he named Ponyo & before he realised that Ponyo is not the usual fish, Ponyo was caught by her father back to the deep sea! Ponyo wanted to turn into a little girl to be wif Sosuke! During her escape to return to land, Ponyo spilled her dad's magic caution & turn the sea into upheavals! Storms broke out & sea level rises to engulf the land... this is pretty endearing to watch as Lisa (Sosuke's mom) had to drive him home along the winding mountain road, while battling the storm!
The story develop when the fish turns into a girl wif short red curls & stuby arms & legs....ponyo's voice-over is really kawaii! She exuded innocent eyes & copied Sosuke in whatever he did, from drinking a hot beverage to cooking instant noodles, haha! Their adventure began when Sosuke had to navigate a boat to search for his missing mom.
Thou the ending was predictable ... it was nevertheless an easy feat to hand-draw all the fine details, coupled with a meaningful story & nice soundtrack.
