As far as i can recall, Will Smith had not appeared on the big screen for some time. Finally, a movie titled ''The Pursuit of Happyness'' is starring Will Smith with his real-life son acting out a story based on a real person ~ Chris Gardner.
One of the few inspiring tales in the commercial movie world. It depicts Chris Gardner's (Will Smith) determination to thrive on for the sake of him & his son's future. Simply because he holds a strong belief...he believe that Happiness is meant to be pursue, to seek & it will not just appear in front of you. A down & out salesman, laden with unpaid bills & taxes...his wife walked out of him. Leaving him as a single dad with a young five year old son. They lived in the poor chinatown area, probably in New York... where the wall outside his son's day-care ctr had the word 'Happyness' scribbled on. A place where people can't even spell 'happiness'?
One day, he discovered the way to get out of poverty, was to get a more stable job with better pay. With some luck, wits & lots of determination, he got shortlisted for a trainee broker position at one of the prestigious brokerage firm. When he realised that the job had no basic pay, he wanted to give up. However, he stayed on and endured a tough period. During the initial 6 months of training, he & his son had to seek refuge from place to place, even to the extend of staying overnight at a subway toilet. Despite these, he was still a loving father and his son was his pillar of strength.
There was a very powerful quote from the movie. When his son was playing basketball, he tried to pour cold-water on his young son. Thereafter, his son stopped playing & kept away his fav basketball. This was when Chris told him, ''Don't ever allow someone to tell you what you can't do. If you have a dream, then you need to protect it. Many a times, when people couldn't achieve something, they will tell you, you can't. So, if you know what you want, you need to fight for it.'' In short, you need to believe in your own dreams!
Of course, Chris Gardner eventually was awarded a permanent job with the brokerage firm. He went on to form his own brokerage company and sold part of his shares to become a millionaire in 2006.
Being a 120 minutes movie, it's a bit slowing moving at intervals. But it was also very real as the narration was done like a bibliograpy style. Not too bad, to inspire one to pursue his true happYness! =)
