在MONGA裡,最令我矚目的英文老歌 ~ Making Love Out of Nothing At All by Air Supply.

Oscar's Best Foreign Lang Film: Departures (おくりびと)

By now, I guess many of you have caught the japanese movie ~ ''Departures'' in the theatres. I only get to watch it after 2 attempts to get tix! Wonder isit due to the fact that only selective GV theatres screening it?

Awarded the 2009 Oscar's Best Foreign Language Film, it certainly earned rave reviews from the media and online reviewers. Thanks to reading all these reviews, i felt that i muz definately catch it before it's gone!

Are you gg to spend $ to watch a movie about death? To be more precise, it's about the casketing processing. In Japanese term, the job is 'Nokanshi' where one helps to clean & 'beautify' the dead before the body is put into a coffin. It's a job that many people shirks and use weird looks to judge... The movie began with Daigo Kobayashi (acted by Masahiro Motoki) doing the nokanshi job as he narrated how he got into this trade. He was supposely a cello player with an orchestra but lost his job when the orchestra dissolved. He decided to return to his hometown with his wife (acted by Ryoko Hirosue). One day, Daigo saw a job ad stating 'departures', thinking that it's likely a tour agency job and went for the interview. By fate, he was hired on the spot and only then realised that it's a nokanshi job...

Daigo had no choice but to take up the job as he needed one...but he was cautious not to let his wife know. He followed his boss and started as an observer... the master was calm & peaceful while he carried out his duties. Daigo was won over in the process & grew to like his job. Death could hit anyone, as in the movie... from a child to the elderly. Behind every death, it carries a tale into the coffin...

I tink each of us will definately experience death of a dear one at least once in our life. Well, dun tink that this movie is a sob sob story, the director really takes effort to inject humour interpersed thru'out the movie. There was this part i like where the boss replied that their service is for all religions, be it buddhism, christanity or hindus... so true! I like how the japanese does movies, and this is an epitome of how fine details are taken care of.

Of course, besides showing the nokanshi procedures...this movie emphasise on family ties as well. As Daigo recounted how his dad made him learn the cello as a six year old boy and how they picked stones together... However his dad left him when he was a boy & his memory of his dad faded...till they met again at the end of the movie.

During the 130 minutes movie, it showed Diago playing the cello... yes, I am mesmerised by the nice tunes playing from the cello...really beautiful! All the more, when he played the cello in the open fields, it certainly makes u feel good. Finally, it's been such a long while since Ryoko Hirosue (广末凉子) appeared in any show! She could be best remembered for the jap drama serial 'Beach Boys'!

Below is a clip of the tune from the movie, enjoy!

《Suspect X》

Do you still remember ‘小哥’from the japanese drama Under the Same Roof (同在屋檐下)?If you have caught that show, also kinda reveals ur current age, hee! Well, juz wana share wif you a japanese movie i saw in the theatres last week ~ 'Suspect X'. The lead actor is none other but Masaharu Fukuyama (福山雅治)!It had been at least 10 yrs since 同在屋檐下 , but he still look juz as great & yes... more charismatic now! Wonder how he maintain it? haha!

If you enjoy reading dectective novels or comics, this could be the movie for you! At the beginning of the movie, the audience already know who's the killer...but the highlight of the movie is how 2 genius battle their wits. A mathematics genius & high sch teacher helped his neighbour to conceal a murder & worked out the perfect alibi that baffled the police. On the other hand, a brilliant physicist (acted by 福山雅治) assisted the police to track down the murderer. Both genius are college mates and were outstanding in their respective fields. It's unique as the case is not solved by the police but a physicist who's able to use logic (minus the 'chim' physics terms) to solve the case. There are also light-hearted moments in the movie which sends the audience laughing! (see the trailer & you will know)

The ending was brilliant and i think few people would ever guess it! Caught this movie as tix for 'Departures' ran out! But it's certainly worth to watch as i get to see the suave 福山雅治 again + a nicely paced story plot which kept my mind awake!

P.S: A search on youtube, i found that there's a drama serial version 'Galileo' which hv the same actor & probably have different cases each ep! How i wish our tv station can air it!

Here's the trailer! Catch it in the theatres before it's gone!

PoNyo on the Cliff by the Sea 。。

Kawaii desu! ''PoNyo PoNyo''... kept hearing this song from its trailer on tv, keke! Months before this Jap anime by 宫崎峻大师 arrived in Singapore... i had read about it's rave review from the chinese papers. It took a long time for 宫崎峻 (Hayao Miyazaki) to painstakingly hand-draw the characters. With the flood of hollywood 3-D animation, i like the idea of going back to basics (2-D anime). It really tests the skills of the anime artist.

I am awed by 宫崎峻 imagination & how he's always able to lend a magic touch to the characters he created. ''Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea'' uses a palette of colours, especially like the pastel shades of the house perched on top of the cliff & it's surroundings. Whereas deep hues are used to depict the uncertainties in the deep waters...

The story teaches us about saving the environment, if humans continue to pollute the sea with all their garbage, many sea species will go into extinction & affect the life cycle chain. Well, aren't the raising sea levels & melting ice bergs our immediate concerns now? We also learnt a thing or two from the 5 yr old boy ~ Sosuke. His father is a sailor & always need to leave him & his young mom, Lisa to fan for themselves. Despite being young, Sosuke is a sensible, well-mannered & brave boy. He know how to cheer his mom up when dad is away by using morse code to signal to his dad. He also works his charm on the old folks at the seniors' home by making 'goldfish' origami for them.

One day, he found a fish trapped in a jar while he was playing at the bottom of the cliff. Sosuke reared the little fish he named Ponyo & before he realised that Ponyo is not the usual fish, Ponyo was caught by her father back to the deep sea! Ponyo wanted to turn into a little girl to be wif Sosuke! During her escape to return to land, Ponyo spilled her dad's magic caution & turn the sea into upheavals! Storms broke out & sea level rises to engulf the land... this is pretty endearing to watch as Lisa (Sosuke's mom) had to drive him home along the winding mountain road, while battling the storm!

The story develop when the fish turns into a girl wif short red curls & stuby arms & legs....ponyo's voice-over is really kawaii! She exuded innocent eyes & copied Sosuke in whatever he did, from drinking a hot beverage to cooking instant noodles, haha! Their adventure began when Sosuke had to navigate a boat to search for his missing mom.

Thou the ending was predictable ... it was nevertheless an easy feat to hand-draw all the fine details, coupled with a meaningful story & nice soundtrack.

Kung Fu Panda + Trailers ...

Thanks to my Co's social committee, I got to enjoy the latest animation film ~ Kung Fu Panda for free! Our Co allowed us to purchase the 2nd tix at corp rate & i bought my buddy, ruby along. Bef the start of the movie at GV Max, Vivo City, there's even refreshments served. We arrived at 5.4o as the movie tix stated 6pm. Got some snacks as i'm afraid i be hungry, hehe! While i Q for the snacks, ruby went to Q for our popcorn & drinks. At 6pm, we went into the theatre & i was impressed by the size & extremely spacious leg-room! It's pretty cold thou'... The movie finally started at 6.30pm.

The whole theatre roared wif laughter fr the beginning till the end. This Dreamworks production had famous celebrities for the characters' voice-overs. Jack Black is the voice of Po, the Panda ~ a noodle shop apprentice who always dream abt kung fu & idolise the top 5 kung fu masters in China. By chance of fate, he was chosen to be the ''Dragon Warrior'' to fight the evil Tai Lung. Knowing nuts about kung fu, Shifu had a big headache on how to train this new disciple. Besides Po, Shifu had trained 5 kung fu masters ~ namely Monkey, Viper, Mantis, Tigeress & Crane. The training regime was a hilarious watch as Shifu realised that he would need an 'unusual' way to train Po, which was to use food to motivate him! waahaaa!

In a nutshell, the moral of the story is to believe in oneself... with determination, nothing proves to be difficult. Let's enjoy the trailer for Kung Fu Panda! Do take some time off to catch this movie! Having a good laugh is certainly a stress-buster!

Alvin!!! (and the Chipmunks) ... ooH aH Ah!

Oh Boy! I luv Alvin and the Chipmunks movie!!! The furry chipmunks ~ Simon, Alvin & Theodore are so adorable & cutez that i really wish to cuddle them off the big screen! Talking chipmunks?? Waaahaaa! Remember watching them since i was a kid... but memory had faded over time since our station had stopped broadcasting the cartoons.

Geez! the movie version is even better cos the chipmunks r Sooo real & 3-D. There's many funny scenes thru'out & it sure does bring the theatre's crowd roaring wif laughter! Ruby & me caught the movie yesterday at The Cathay & we were veri much entertained by the hippie songs + the chipmunks' voices.

To refresh your memory ~ Simon is the brainy boy; whereas Alvin is impulsive, charming & musical... last but not least is Theodore ~ shy, innocent and trusting. Their daddy is David Seville (Dave for short), a composer whose patience & love is veri much tested with his 3 hyperactive ''kids''.

From the movie, I find Theodore the cutest of all, especially when he had a nightmare & wish to share the same bed wif Dave. In the end, he snuggled up close to Dave's neck & face while sleeping soundly. The 3 of them simply luv oven-baked waffles & in an attempt to make breakfast, the house was turned into a big mess, haahaa! Theodore luv to eat most, his chubby built & cheeks make me feel like 'pinching' him, kekeke!

Only upon reading abt the chipmunks' history, i realised it's created 4 decades ago! Ross Bagdasarian was the creator of the rap song 'Witch Doctor' at his most broke moment, using a tape recorder to 'speed up' the sound - that's how the chipmunk sound came about. Followed on, ''The Chipmunk Song'' (released in 1958) was inspired by his own kids who wished that Christmas could arrive earlier. To add a character to the song, he was inspired by a little chipmunk tt stop his car in the midst of road!! I find tt hilarious (^o^). Btw, the 3 Chipmunks r named aft the recording Co's execs, haha! Never did Ross dreamt that his records would become top hits & won him Grammy Awards. The cartoon versions were launched in 1961.

Let's enjoy their 2 Hit Songs!

The Pursuit of HappYness

As far as i can recall, Will Smith had not appeared on the big screen for some time. Finally, a movie titled ''The Pursuit of Happyness'' is starring Will Smith with his real-life son acting out a story based on a real person ~ Chris Gardner.

One of the few inspiring tales in the commercial movie world. It depicts Chris Gardner's (Will Smith) determination to thrive on for the sake of him & his son's future. Simply because he holds a strong belief...he believe that Happiness is meant to be pursue, to seek & it will not just appear in front of you. A down & out salesman, laden with unpaid bills & taxes...his wife walked out of him. Leaving him as a single dad with a young five year old son. They lived in the poor chinatown area, probably in New York... where the wall outside his son's day-care ctr had the word 'Happyness' scribbled on. A place where people can't even spell 'happiness'?

One day, he discovered the way to get out of poverty, was to get a more stable job with better pay. With some luck, wits & lots of determination, he got shortlisted for a trainee broker position at one of the prestigious brokerage firm. When he realised that the job had no basic pay, he wanted to give up. However, he stayed on and endured a tough period. During the initial 6 months of training, he & his son had to seek refuge from place to place, even to the extend of staying overnight at a subway toilet. Despite these, he was still a loving father and his son was his pillar of strength.

There was a very powerful quote from the movie. When his son was playing basketball, he tried to pour cold-water on his young son. Thereafter, his son stopped playing & kept away his fav basketball. This was when Chris told him, ''Don't ever allow someone to tell you what you can't do. If you have a dream, then you need to protect it. Many a times, when people couldn't achieve something, they will tell you, you can't. So, if you know what you want, you need to fight for it.'' In short, you need to believe in your own dreams!

Of course, Chris Gardner eventually was awarded a permanent job with the brokerage firm. He went on to form his own brokerage company and sold part of his shares to become a millionaire in 2006.

Being a 120 minutes movie, it's a bit slowing moving at intervals. But it was also very real as the narration was done like a bibliograpy style. Not too bad, to inspire one to pursue his true happYness! =)

The Host
